Replicated, which sells tools that help software makers create and deploy on-premises versions of their applications, raises $50M Series C led by Owl Rock (Mike Wheatley/SiliconANGLE)

On-premises software delivery firm Replicated Inc. is much more prosperous after it has racked up $50 million from a fresh round of financing.

The Series C round was led by Owl Rock, a division of Blue Owl Capital. New investors to Lead Edge Capital and Headline, as well as existing investors Two Sigma Ventures, Amplify Partners, BoldStart, Ridgeline, and Heavybit, participated in the round.

What Replicated’s platform is able to do is cut down on what is required to make an application run on servers that are on-premises. In normal circumstances, this process can take months or even weeks since software makers must develop auxiliary components like an installer to enable the application on the customer’s hardware. Replicated provides ready-made components, which save businesses the effort of developing these components.

The company offers an installation engine that allows applications to be installed either on premises or in the public cloud. It utilizes the open-source container orchestration program Kubernetes as the basis for the application. In the event that the framework hasn’t been set up in the user’s environment, Replicated will embed it along with the application.

Customers also get an administrator console that manages the various replication-powered app deployments. Through this console, users can make backups of their data and apps, patch them, and complete additional maintenance activities.

“Traditionally, installing software on-premise involves teams of developers to create and maintain the instances in many different environments.” Replicated’s co-founder and chief director, Grant Miller, told SiliconANGLE. “A significant amount of customization and close interaction with the customer are essential for every installation, and as a consequence, it can slow the process.” “Most often, professionals or field operations must be involved in each installation for a customer.”

Other issues associated with on-premise deployments are the requirement for a more dedicated level of IT department oversight and customer service after the first installation, Miller said. SaaS typically automates maintenance and remediation that on-premises deployments are unable to accomplish.

Replicated’s platform is a hit with more than half of the companies that are part of the Fortune 500. Most of the clients are software developers such as UiPath Inc., HashiCorp Inc., Puppet Inc., Rocket.Chat, Circle Internet Services Inc., and PluralSight Inc.

Given the current trend of providing enterprise software on the cloud, the popularity of Replicated may come as a surprise. But the company says there are a variety of scenarios where an on-premises solution might be more suitable. It points to the results of a recent study by Dimensional Research of over 400 software companies, which found that more than 90% of them reported an increase in sales of on-premises software over the past five years. It is clear that there is an extremely high demand for software that runs on premises.
