How to use a fake IP address and mask yourself online

Sometimes, you may need to conceal your IP address. These are ways to hide your IP address online and remain anonymous.

Online privacy is becoming more important as privacy becomes more and more a travesty every year.

Many people use fake IP addresses because of this. It is important to be clear that “fake IP addresses” does not mean creating a new one from thin air. It’s impossible. You can hide your IP address behind an already-existing one. This is known as IP masking. How can you spoof an IP address?

1. Use a VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. However, it is actually much easier than it sounds. You can connect your device or computer to another network and then browse the internet through that network. It looks like the activity you are doing is coming from them and not you.

You mask your IP address when you connect to a VPN. The VPN must give you access to trace traffic to your computer (or you would need to reveal your IP address via DNS leak).

Paid VPN services are more reliable than free ones. They have too many downsides and risks. One of the most important points is that you cannot trust a free VPN service. Is their data being sold? Would they be willing to reveal your true IP address if you asked? It happens.

We recommend only using a logless VPN. These VPNs do not keep activity logs and can therefore not give your IP address to anyone. Logless VPNs also encrypt all traffic between the network and your computer, which prevents government or ISP snooping.

VPNs can be useful in many situations, but there are too many myths that could put you off. You should avoid misinformation and use a VPN to secure your searching.

2. Use a web proxy

A web proxy functions in the same manner as a VPN. Once you connect to the proxy server all of your web traffic will flow through it. Your IP address is hidden by the proxy server’s address.

There are two main differences between proxy and VPN .

Web proxies are not encrypted in general. Even though your proxy masks your IP address, ISPs and governments can still see the traffic. Some websites might still be able see your true IP address via JavaScript or the now-defunct Flash. This is another threat to your online security.

Second, you can route only browser traffic with some browsers. You can use a web proxy by going into your browser’s settings, and entering the IP address of the proxy server manually. This allows other applications and devices, such as Skype, to use your real IP address.

You can find a free proxy server by visiting PremProxy and ProxyList. A proxy server within your country will speed it up, but a proxy server located in another country may be more effective for bypassing content that is blocked in your region and adding an extra layer of obscurity.

Note: Chrome and Opera are not equipped with a browser-specific proxy function. They only use system-wide proxy settings. You can however use extensions like Proxy Shifter & Manager for web proxies that are only used to affect browser traffic.

3. Make use of public Wi-Fi

Instead of having your traffic routed through another person’s network you can choose to connect directly to that person’s network. The easiest way to do so is to use public Wi-Fi.

This is the only way to hide your IP address. Public Wi-Fi is not traceable back to your home. If it’s a hotspot like Starbucks, there is no way for anyone to trace your activity back to you. Your activity may be overshadowed by many other users, such as Starbucks.

Public Wi-Fi comes with its own risks.

Most public Wi-Fi hotspots have unencrypted connections by default. If anyone is sniffing the network, all your activity can be seen. This includes login details for sites like banks or e-commerce. Malware infections can also be spread by public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Hackers can also steal your identity over public Wi-Fi. While you may be concealing your IP address, it still exposes you to security and privacy risks.

4. Tor Browser

Tor browser is sometimes called the Onion router. It hides your IP address whenever you connect to the internet. It works by connecting you to the Tor network at the beginning, which then transmits your data via random relay servers hosted worldwide by volunteers.

Most people don’t live in dictatorial countries such as Venezuela or China. It’s an excellent tool to have in your arsenal for privacy solutions, even if Tor is banned.

Go to the official Tor site to get the browser installed. After the setup is completed, click Connect. After the setup is complete, click on strong>Connect. It may take some time, so be patient.

Once it’s completed, you can browse the internet anonymously. You should read all of the security tips online about Tor before you start using it. These tips are available on the homepage!
