How to register for NHIF Online in Kenya (for self-employed)

The National Hospital Insurance Fund, a government initiative, was created to help civil servants get hospital coverage. Now, anyone over 18 years old in Kenya can register for the fund and make monthly contributions. For years, applicants who wanted to become NHIF members had to wait in long lines at NHIF offices to get their numbers and cards. You can now apply online or in person thanks to technology. This guide will show you how to register online for the NHIF.

Important to have NHIF coverage

You get some benefits by being a member the NHIF

  • Hospital bills that are highly subsidized will be covered. Depending on the type of treatment and the hospital, NHIF could cover part or all of your medical bills. This will help you save money over the long-term.
  • NHIF is a great option for emergency situations where medical treatment is not planned.
  • Your spouse and any registered dependents are covered by NHIF.

Registering: What do you need?

You now know how important it is to have this cover. Here are the steps you need to complete your online registration.

  • Original ID scanned.
  • If applicable, scan a copy of your marriage certificate.
  • If applicable, take recent passport-sized photos of yourself and your spouse.

For foreign residents

You will need to apply if you are a foreign resident and also want to join NHIF.

  • A scan of your passport or alien certification.
  • A scan of your passport photo.

Follow these steps

Now that you have all your documents, let’s get started.
