How to connect two routers together to boost your Wi-Fi

It’s likely that you have an old router in your garage. Instead of throwing it out, you can use it to extend Wi-Fi. You’ll be able to save a few bucks and get better performance than a Wi Fi extender.

Although the setup of a Wi-Fi extender is simple, it comes with a high cost-performance. You can solve the problem by reducing latency or adding another router to your network.

Here’s how to do it.

Parts and tools required

You will need parts and some tools to complete the installation. Most of these items are likely already in your home. These items are available at most department stores.

  • Primary router
  • A second router
  • Ethernet cable (to the desired length)
  • You have access to a computer
  • Internet connection

Ethernet cables can only be used up to a specific distance. They also have a limit on the speed they can transmit. This depends on the Ethernet cable’s length, as well as what kind of cable it is . These range from Cat 1 to 8.

How to access your primary router

The primary router allows you to connect to the internet from your secondary router. This is the place where the majority of setup takes place. No matter what brand or type of router you use, you will need to log in to the router setup page.

Setup the Primary Router

The default router information is available online or in your owner’s manual, regardless of whether you are logging in for the first time.

Next, check the DHCP Server box on your primary router. However, this should be turned on by default. The primary router is now installed. You can route the Ethernet cable behind furniture, under carpeting or through the drywall to your secondary router’s desired location, but don’t connect them yet.

Setup of the Secondary Router

You are now ready to move on to the second part of the installation. To access the internet on the secondary router, however, you will need to connect to it first. You can accomplish this in the same way as the primary router. One end of the Ethernet cable is connected to your computer, and the other into the secondary router. Next, follow the same steps as for the primary router to locate DHCP Server within the router settings. To prevent IP address issues, this must be disabled in the secondary router.

 

After checking the DCHP Server box on your secondary router is unchecked, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer to the secondary router and do a system reboot on both networks. First, connect your primary network and make sure it is operational.

Place the Ethernet cable from your primary router and then place the secondary router at the desired spot. This should be located where there is less signal or patchy internet. An Ethernet cable should be connected to the primary router. This will allow it to connect to the internet via the secondary router’s Ethernet port.

Test Your Internet Connection

You should now be able connect to both routers separately, wirelessly or via the WLAN ports, at this stage of the installation. This is likely to be more efficient than using a Wi Fi extender because latency is reduced and wired connections have a greater dominance than wireless.

Double-check your settings to ensure that the secondary router works. Then, restart the system. This can be done by disengaging the appliances from the power supply for approximately 30 seconds. Both routers will be fully functional and emit a Wi Fi signal, even in the most remote spots.
