How to Change the Colors and Themes of Your Instagram Chat

Here are some ways to inject color into your Instagram chats.

Variety is the best spice in life. So goes the old saying. It’s great that Instagram allows you to change the colors and themes of your Instagram chats. This allows you to spice up boring DMs.

Dark Mode was the only way to change the look of your Instagram chats. This became tedious quickly. Chat themes make messaging on Instagram much more enjoyable, customizable, and visually appealing.

This article will show you how to use Instagram chat templates to spice up your DMs. We also provide troubleshooting tips in the event that chat themes don’t work on your Instagram account.

To Access Themes, Update Your Instagram DMs

Chat themes can only be activated manually by updating your InstagramDMs ( all you need to know about InstagramDMs). Here’s how you do it:

  1. Tap the profile image at the bottom-right of the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the hamburger symbol at the top-right corner to select Settings.
  3. Finally, click the Update Messaging button. If this option isn’t available, you can continue to the troubleshooting section.
  4. An overview of all changes to Instagram Messaging will appear. Tap Update for more information.

A message should be sent to you advising that Messages was updated. After the update is completed successfully, the Direct Messaging icon (DM) will be replaced with the Facebook Messenger icon. You can now use chat themes in your Instagram conversation.

How chat themes can change the look of your Instagram DMs

You can choose a theme to change the chat background/wallpaper to a preset photo or art. The color of your text bubbles, however, will be altered to match the background.

The wallpaper changes are effective for both the chatter and the recipient. If your friend does something creative and changes the chat theme on their Instagram account, it will also reflect on your end.

If you want to use different colors or themes, and cannot agree on one, this could lead to confusion or conflict. Chat themes are available for both private and group chats. They aren’t available in the Instagram web version.

How colors and gradients can change the look of your Instagram DMs

You can only change the color or gradient of your text bubble. Your chat window will not change the color of your receiver’s text bubble or background.

Instagram sends an in-chat message to both chat parties when a chat theme changes. You can quickly change the chat theme or color gradients by selecting Change theme in the notification message.

Stop boring Instagram chats

Chat bubbles and the default Instagram background are boring. Chat themes allow you to treat your Instagram DMs as a canvas. You can get creative by adding color to your Instagram DMs. This way, even your friends will be bored, you will have something to look at.

These changes will be reflected on both your side and on the other. Therefore, it is a good idea to not change chat themes too often without consulting the other person.
