How to apply for the new digital driving license in Kenya

The NTSA issued thousands of Kenyans new digital driving licenses in 2018. Some driving companies insist that their employees have the new type of license before they give them jobs. Digital licences are more secure than the red-book ones, thanks to the fraud-proof microchip at the back. The card allows NTSA officers to access almost all information about you, including your blood type, age , driving history, and traffic offenses. After 3 years, the digital licenses expire and you will need to renew them. Here’s how to obtain a new digital driving license.

The digital driving licence has many advantages

The old-generation driving licenses are still valid, but the digital ones offer some benefits. These could include:

  • An installed point system is included with the micro-chipped driving license. This system can be used to your advantage or disadvantage. Depending on how you drive, the NTSA can use these points to either punish or reward drivers. You can be subject to a suspension of your licence if you are convicted of a traffic offense. If you are a good driver, your points will go up. This information will be made available to potential employers and insurers. It can increase your chances of landing a job.
  • Your vehicle ownership status, number plate, and other information will be included in the digital license. Because it is almost impossible to duplicate or fabricate false information in the NTSA database, fraud and theft will be greatly reduced.
  • Your driving record will also be available to future employers and insurance companies. This will prove your driving skills.

Follow these steps

These are the steps you need to take in order to apply for the digital license.

  • Log in to your NTSA portal from your computer. This can be done via eCitizen, or your TIMS account.
  • Next, search for the “Driving license” option. Click the “Apply for smart driving licensure” button in the drop-down menu.
  • Fill in the required details and confirm any that have been pre-filled. Your details will be displayed if you have a vehicle already registered. You might have to change some details, such as your blood type and eye color.
  • Once you have completed all fields, click the “next” button.
  • The new digital driving license fee is Ksh 33000. Convenience charges are Ksh 50 and MPESA transactions Ksh 60. In order to access your MPESA account, you will need Ksh 3110.
  • Follow the instructions to complete the payment. Print the invoice.
  • Go back to the New digital driving license’ dashboard and click on book appointment’. Choose a time and date that you are available to visit the nearest NTSA Office.

The NTSA offices

On the booked date, visit the NTSA office. To avoid waiting in line, be at the NTSA offices before 8.30 am. You will need the invoice to pay. An NTSA agent will assist you with the remainder of your application. These include biometric information, submission of a photo, and payment confirmation.

After everything is in order, it will take at least five working days before you can collect your digital driving license. Car title loan calculator details available here.
