Google Pixelbook 12in Review: Specs, Price & Performance

This is a detailed Google Pixelbook 12in review guide.

This section will provide information about the features and performance of the product, as well as prices and other details that can help you make the best buying decision.

Let’s get started…

Compact Chromebooks with unique designs are back on the market.

Chromebooks are different from regular laptops and computers because of their emphasis on speed and efficiency. Chromebooks use Chrome OS, an exclusive operating system that includes cloud storage, Google’s best features and multiple layers of security against different threats.

The Google Pixelbook 12inch is a good example of a Chromebook that has been a hit recently. It features slick design, powerful specifications and a low price.

Another popular option for older times was the Chromebook Pixel. It was also the predecessor of Google’s next-generation Pixelbook model.

The name of the Pixelbook has a tweak to indicate that it is not just an upgraded version of the Google Pixelbook. It’s actually a completely different model, with many upgrades.

Although it’s not surprising that such a well-respected computer is expensive, the real question is how cost-effective the Chromebook is.

We believe the Google Pixelbook is a great choice for those with specific requirements.

Design

Google deserves kudos for their brilliant vision.

It is not very appealing to think of a small laptop with a 3/2 aspect ratio. The Pixelbook is one of the most appealing laptops on the market.

Pixelbook’s aluminum unibody design is very slim and has a modern, convenient design. Additional features to be praised include the silicon accents and wrist rests.

The uniqueness of the Pixelbook lies in its ability to fit the description of a small notebook. The Pixelbook is not a traditional laptop, but rather a beautiful imitation of one.

It reflects the aesthetic appeal and vintage sattle-stitched notebooks you love.

The laptop’s thinness measures 10.3mm when wrapped in aluminum and white plastic. As its name implies, the display measures 12 inches in width and has a default resolution 2400×1600 pixels. The display is sharper than the Retina’s hyped up display. It has a 235ppi pixel density which gives it an advantage over its competitors.

The Pixelbook is only 2.5 pounds in weight, making it very easy to transport. It is ideal for those who need to be mobile and have their laptop with them all the time. Your Pixelbook can be personalized with cool, personal touches. You can also customize personalized stickers to decorate your Pixelbook.

Dual USB Type-C ports on the sides of the Pixelbook provide power-drawing USB Type C ports. On the left side, you will find a headphone jack.

Durability

It would seem that you would treat a $2,000 laptop like a child. You wouldn’t let it go without sighing and even your hands. You might lose your laptop at your desk due to unfortunate circumstances. It is important to consider durability before you make a technical investment.

Laptopmag did a drop test on 11 Chromebooks in order to assess their relative durability.

It was concluded that, while Pixelbook may not be the most robust laptop on the market, it is the strongest and most durable Chromebook you will find.

Laptopmag dropped the Pixelbook at a height of 4.5 feet onto concrete and carpet to discover that it was unharmed.

It looked like the Pixelbook was just out of the box.

Specifications

A laptop must be powerful, with impressive specifications and features in order to be affordable. The Pixelbook’s high price cannot be justified without proper specifications.

Google has not let us down in this department, fortunately.

Let’s take a look at what this 12-inch Google Pixelbook has to offer users.

Performance

We were led to believe that Chromebooks couldn’t be equipped with powerful specs that would ensure seamless performance in earlier versions.

With the Google Pixelbook 12in, however, we now have a Chromebook that is powerful.

The powerful Intel Core i5/i7 seventh-generation processor makes the Pixelbook feel like a knife cutting through a cake. It is sleek and smooth.

Customers should be aware that these ultra-low-power versions are a closer representation of the older Core m processors than those that run high end laptops.

To maximize immersion and optimize performance, users can pair them with up to 16GB RAM and up to512GB NVMe storage.

The Pixelbook’s Core i5 runs at a solid 1.2GHz, with a 3.3 GHz boost. Core i7 is able to run at 1.3GHz and up to a 3.6GHz boost.

Pixelbook has memory capacities of 8GB, 16GB RAM and SSD storage up to 512GB.

Even without using the best specifications, you can still get a smooth laptop with a Google Pixelbook that has a Core i5-7Y57 CPU and 8GB RAM. Even though it isn’t the best the Pixelbook can handle at the moment, it’s enough to run Android apps without any lag.

You can also split your screen to watch a high-resolution YouTube video and open a dozen tabs at the same time.

The best thing about the Pixelbook is the integrated Intel HD 615 graphics processor. This chip enhances the smooth visuals of the laptop and streamlines its performance, offering an average 60 frames per second in the WebGL Aquarium test.

According to the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the Pixelbook scored a healthy 7,927, beating its ultraportable-notebook counterparts by a solid margin.

Pixelbook also received a score of 140 from the JetStream JavaScript benchmark, which measures the performance of web applications.

Google’s Chromebook scored higher than the Samsung Chromebook Pro or the Asus Chromebook Flip.

Pixelbook was however beaten by the Yoga 920.

Display

We were taught that the best Chromebooks had a 1080p display before the Google Pixelbook 12in was launched.

Pixelbook’s vibrant and colorful display has a resolution of 2400×1600-pixels, which means customers shouldn’t settle for less.

Pixelbook’s screen produces 117 percent sRGB spectrum. This paints the screen with vivid and bright colors that make 4K YouTube videos look almost real.

The laptop’s color correction and display are superior to traditional models, beating even some top-names like the Lenovo Chromebook Flip C302CA and the Lenovo Yoga 920 .

The Google Pixelbook can emit up to 421 nits. This brightness helps to see strong colors at 75 degrees to the right and left.

The average threshold for laptops is 290 nit. This is a good deal.

Multitouch-enabled screens are the best. The feature was also available in older Chromebooks, but it shines in Google’s Pixelbook due to its compatibility with Android apps in addition to traditional web-based apps.

The Pixelbook’s touch recognition is excellent and there are very few errors. Therefore, the user experience will be seamless and uninterrupted.

Audio

The Pixelbook’s sound quality was one area that seemed lacking.

The Pixelbook is loud, but not to mislead you. It can even echo your favorite songs across large auditoriums. The sound is not clear and lacks bass.

You might enjoy the crisp and clear vocals and drum beats of your favorite music but miss the subtle bass hints. This would not normally be a problem since almost everyone uses a third party device such as a headphone to listen music on their laptops.

Battery Life

A Chromebook should offer a long battery life.

The Pixelbook does not perform in this category. The Pixelbook is not like your average Chromebook laptop, so it shouldn’t surprise you.

The Laptop Mag Battery Test showed that the Chromebook lasted only 7 hours and 43 mins, which is lower than the 8 hours and 34 minutes category.

Google made up for the error by offering the fast-charging battery option. This feature claims to guarantee a battery life of two hours after charging for 15 minutes.

Heat

Trust me, you won’t want to spend money on a laptop that heats quickly.

The Google Pixelbook is cool, even after long hours of intensive use. It’s strange that the laptop heats up in one place.

Laptopmag reported that the Pixelbook recorded comfortable temperatures at various points after streaming for 15 minutes. The laptop’s edge, where the hinges are, was hotter than usual, reaching 101 degrees Fahrenheit. This is well above the comfortable zone of 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional Features

Google’s Pixelbook Chromebook offers a variety of add-ons, such as Bluetooth 4.2 and additional equipment.

Keyboard & Touchpad

The backlit keyboard on Pixelbook is quite comfortable, especially for those who use it for long periods of time. The keys may not be as spaced as we would like, but they are still more comfortable than those in the Chromebook category.

The Pixelbook comes with a silicon palm rest that has a rubbery feel to it. This makes typing more comfortable.

The touchpad makes scrolling through web pages smooth and without any glitches. The touchpad’s three-finger swipe-down function allows users to see all of the Chrome windows and Android applications at once.

Pixelbook Pen

The Google Pixelbook Pen, which can be paired with Google Assistant, is another interesting addition.

This pen is not included with the laptop and you will need to pay an additional $150. This pen’s primary function is to circle objects or text on the screen in order to receive more information from a digital assistant.

Despite being fast and pressure sensitive to the right level, the pen still has some latency issues. It works well when you need to circle something for Google Assistant. You might experience some lag when using the pen to draw or write apps.

The only problem with the Pixelbook pen, however, is its inability to be powered by AAAA batteries. These batteries are not readily available in local shops.

Webcam

The Pixelbook is a premium device that offers a flawless experience for its users. However, the webcam is disappointing.

If you plan to attend many online meetings using the webcam’s built-in, 0.9-megapixel resolution, it is not enough.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

This laptop has a dual-band 2×2 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2. It is ideal for connecting to external devices.

The Pixelbook’s lackluster physical connection compares to the iPhone, which has only two USB 3.1 Type C ports and one headphone jack.

Software & Operating Systems

Older Chromebooks had a primary problem: they couldn’t meet the standards of Windows and macOS.

Chromebooks could only be used with Chrome Web Store apps, which were, to put it mildly, full of useless junk. However, the Pixelbook integrated features from Google Play Store and its Android applications to the laptop. This gave users the opportunity to compete with other operating systems.

Security is one of the key strengths of Chrome OS. Chrome OS ensures that security updates are handled on the backend. You can protect your data with the integration of TPM technology on Google’s trusted Pixelbook.

Chrome OS allows users to connect their Chrome devices to their Chrome OS laptops. You don’t need to wait for your Wi-Fi to come back on. Instead, place one of Google smartphones in front of the Pixel or Nexus to create a tethering. This will turn the Nexus and Pixel phones into hotspots that can be used to connect to the laptop.

A sadder aspect is that the software limits how many apps you can run on it. To make them compatible with Chrome Operating System, many popular apps need to be rewritten.

Google smartly made sure that their users have efficient alternatives to these applications in order to enhance the user experience.

Although the Chrome Operating System won’t be able to compete with well-known names such as Windows and macOS, they are slowly but surely making progress.

Price

The Google Pixelbook is not cheap. It costs $999 to get the basic model with a Core i5-7Y57 processor and 8GB RAM. There are 128GB of storage space.

These are the details of the prices

Processor RAM ROM Price
i5 8GB 256GB $849
i5 16GB 256GB $999
i5 16GB 512GB $1399
i7 16GB 512GB $1,699

Pixelbook’s powerful and modern design can be ignored, but that is not what will make it a bargain.

We’ve already discussed the efficiency of Pixelbook compared to other Chromebook models and more traditional models in this article. The results of several performance-based tests show that Pixelbook wins more often than the others.

The Pros & Cons

  • Average battery life

Bottom line

The Pixelbook is superior to other Chromebook alternatives in terms of its aesthetics, specs, display, design, and many other features. It also holds its own against established Windows- and iOS-backed rivals in the market.

Only the high price and short battery life of the Google Pixelbook 12inch can deter customers from considering purchasing it.

Pixelbook, however, is the best representation of Chrome OS-run Chromebooks on the market if money is not an issue.
