9 Common iCloud Issues on iPhone and iPad (And How To Fix Them)

Is iCloud broken? This is how to fix iCloud problems such as a locked account, an error in iCloud or other issues.

Almost everyone who owns an Apple device uses iCloud. It allows you to sync photos and calendars across all of your Apple devices. However, if iCloud doesn’t work, you could lose all your data.

Here’s a list of common iCloud issues and how to fix them. You can find the solution to your problem below, whether iCloud is not loading properly or you are having trouble signing in to iCloud via your iPhone.

1. Cannot connect to iCloud

If your device is unable to connect to iCloud, the first thing you should do is verify that all Apple systems are online. Go to Apple’s System Status website to ensure that every iCloud-related service is marked with a green circle.

Apple’s problems with iCloud are indicated by different shapes in yellow and red. Apple will fix any issues with iCloud if it isn’t available right away.

If iCloud has been set up, you may need to accept new terms and conditions before you can connect again. Open the Setting app for your iPhone or iPad. Tap your name at top. If there are new terms and conditions, a pop-up will ask you to accept them.

If you fail to do so, sign out of iCloud and then log back in. This is how to do it:

  1. Go to Settings > “Your Name”.
  2. Scroll down to tap Sign out.
  3. When prompted, enter your Apple ID Password to Turn off Find Me.
  4. Select the data you want to keep on your device. Anything that isn’t saved to iCloud can still be saved. Then, tap Sign out.
  5. To sign in using your Apple ID details, return to Settings

2. iCloud Doesn’t Sync Data Across Devices

iCloud syncs all your data automatically when it works. This means that you can take a picture on one device, and it will sync seamlessly to all your other devices.

  1. Turn off your device, wait for a few minutes before you try to restart it.

  1. Go to Settings > (Your Name) > iCloud.

4. Your iCloud Settings Never Stop Updating

If you try to use Files, you might see an alert saying ICloud Drive is loading. Sometimes, an alert will say you can’t sign in due to a problem communicating iCloud. It’s best to wait at least five minutes before you try to fix it.


You can still get stuck at the updating iCloud settings screen if you wait for five minutes.

  1. Turn off your device, wait for a few minutes before you try to restart it.
  2. Follow these steps to force restart of your iPhone or iPad if your device is not responsive.
  3. Open Settings after restarting your device. Sign in to iCloud if necessary. Next, open strong>Settings and sign in to iCloud.

5. Sign in to see an iCloud authentication error

Most often, if you are unable to sign in to iCloud, it is because you have entered the wrong password or username. Sometimes, however, an authentication error may appear even if you have the correct credentials.

This message or other failed authentication messages may be received.

  1. Visit the Apple ID Website.
  2. Log in using your Apple ID username password.
  3. To sign in, click If you are still having trouble signing in, please click Forgotten Apple ID or Password? to reset the login details.

6. iCloud says you have an unsupported device or Apple ID

An Apple ID may have been created in unusual circumstances. This can lead to problems with iCloud. Normally, if the Apple ID is compatible with other Apple services like iTunes or App Store, it shouldn’t have any problems with iCloud.


Similarly, iCloud may think your device is unsupported if it encounters a problem. To determine if your Apple ID is not working, try another device.

7. You ran out of iCloud Storage

You can create more space by managing your iCloud storage.

If you don’t want to purchase more iCloud storage, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Manage storage.
  2. Choose Storage Plan.
  3. To confirm your monthly subscription, choose your storage upgrade option and enter your Apple ID password.
  4. Apple immediately charges you and your storage is available.


If you are unable to upgrade, or get a message saying your iCloud storage cannot be upgraded at the moment, go to Settings > [Your name] > Payment and Shipping.

8. Verification fails when you sign in or out of iCloud

Sometimes, you might not be able to sign in to iCloud from your iPhone or iPad due Verification Failed. Or because your account is unavailable. You might also find that you cannot sign out of iCloud for the same reason. This can often be caused by a problem with your internet connection, or Apple ID login details.

There are several ways to fix it.

  1. Turn off your device, wait for a few minutes before you try to restart it.
  2. To test your internet connection, you can stream a video from YouTube or another site. To see if it improves, restart your router.
  3. Go to Settings >General > Date and Time to verify that your device’s date/time are correct. If it isn’t already, turn on the option to set Automatically.
  4. You can verify your Apple ID on another device by going to Settings > [Your name] > Password and Security > If you are using two-factor authentication with iCloud, this code is required to sign in.
  5. To log in to iCloud, use Wi-Fi rather than cellular data.


9. Your iPhone or iPad keeps asking for an iCloud password

When you’re using your iPhone/iPad, a prompt asks you to enter your Apple ID credentials. It appears again a few minutes later, asking you to enter your iCloud credentials.

This is an old iCloud issue that can still be encountered from time to time. This problem can be fixed with any of these iCloud troubleshooting suggestions:

  • Turn off your device, wait for a few minutes before you try to restart it.
  • Go to Settings > Your Name > Sign Out. You can then choose to not keep any data on the device. You can sign out by going back to Settings or Sign in.
  • To make sure iCloud works properly, visit Apple’s Website Status
  • To reset your Apple ID password, visit Apple’s iForgot webpage. Then sign in to iCloud using the new password.
  • Finally, backup and restore your iPhone. This can be time-consuming so make sure you save it for last.
